Fuel management is the planned manipulation and (or) reduction of living or dead forest fuels for forest management and other land use objectives (CIFFC Wildland Fire Management Glossary, 2021). Some fuel management projects have already taken place in the Village, with more scheduled in the near future to mitigate potential negative impacts from wildfires.
Current fuel management projects have been planned with the direction of Council and guided by the Village's Community Wildfire Protection Plan, 2019 and its draft Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan which was since finalized in the fall of 2024.
Various factors impact the steps and timeframes required for Fuel Management to occur, including, but not limited to: vicinity to waterways, land ownership, at risk species, and bird nesting windows.
Spirit Trail Fuel Management:
The main objective of this fuel management prescription is to reduce the fire risk to the forest surrounding the popular Spirit Trail loop system and residential areas adjacent to the treatment unit by decreasing the likelihood of an accidental ignition. The prescription will take into consideration the area with 10-metres of the trail pathway.
There will be impacts to trail use during the Spirit Trail fuel management work to ensure safety. Be sure to check our website and social media pages for information on any closures and detours that may be in affect.
