FireSmart BC is the provincial program dedicated to helping British Columbians reduce their wildfire risk and is the best resource for individuals, neighbourhoods, and communities looking to protect themselves and their properties.

Statistics estimate that 50% of homes burnt during a wildfire are started by embers, which travel a distance of 2km on average. Under the right conditions, embers have been known to travel 6km.

When embers land on or near a fire-resilient home or yard, they typically burn out before the roofs or walls can ignite. If the same ember lands on a fuel source of any sort, it has a much better chance of generating the heat necessary for ignition. This is why implementing FireSmart practices on your property is so important. FireSmart principles are designed to mitigate a home's vulnerability to wildfire. Homes ignite due to the condition of the home and everything that surrounds it, up to 30 metres from the foundation- this is called the Home Ignition Zone.

Thanks to funding from the Province of British Columbia through UBCM's Community Resiliency Investment: FireSmart Community Funding program, the Village has been able implement FireSmart initiatives within the community. In 2024, a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan was drafted which acts as a guiding document to increase wildfire resiliency.

The Village is pleased to offer resident Home Ignition Zone Assessments and support residents as they take steps to increase the resiliency of their home, and in turn, the community.
